Cottage Project Update: Next build July 16th and 23rd

With our Cottage Project, Mission Circle has committed to provide funding and volunteer labor to build transitional sleeping cottages, used as a first step for people who are unhoused or face similar challenges. We are building these cottages because we believe that every individual should have a healthy, safe place to live—even if it’s only temporary. These cottages provide an interim step toward permanent housing, with wrap-around social services to support the journey.

Come help us build our next sleeping cottage during July 2022! Our planned construction Saturdays are July 16th and 23rd. Once again we’ll be partnering with Casas de Luz for construction expertise and assistance. Any level of skill that you have – in almost any area – will be put to good use. Signup sheets will be available at tables after Masses in late June, you can contact Warren Henderson at warrenhcl@hotmail.com or Dale Burchby at dale.burchby@gmail.com, or you can go directly to the sign up sheet to volunteer. We also will need help on the “food” team, which was a key to our success and high morale on the previous build. Feel free to contact our food team lead, Debbie Derderian, at dderderian6118@gmail.com.

The cottage will be similar to the one that so many of you helped us build in February at Rising Tide Ranch in Vista. This cottage will be on the grounds of the Church of the Brethren, in the Gateway area of San Diego a couple miles east of Balboa Park. The objective of this housing is to provide shelter for clients of refugee agencies. Church of the Brethren is currently partnering with Catholic Charities to offer support for new neighbors from Haiti. Stays are planned to be less than 120 days en route to more permanent placement.
